Baduy

Approximately 160 miles west of metropolitan Jakarta, precisely in Kenekes Village, Rangkasbitung, Lebak, Banten, Lives the Baduy tribal community. They live with a lifestyle that is 180 degress diffrent than other Jakarta residents. No cell phones, electricity, cosmetics, pesticides, or other exhibition of luxury. Time seem to run slow. Their lives are like that in the past, when electricity and technology were still an illusion. It si estimated that the Baduy people live like this for already more than 600 years. "Time may change, but the culture of our ancestor ought to be preserved". Baduy divided into 3 social classes, namely Tangtu, Panamping, and Dangka. Tangtu or Baduy Dalam is the highest social class and is the community that is most stringent and conservative in running the tradition. Panamping or Baduy Luar is looser in running the tradition: they live in Kampung Cikadu, Kadu  Ketuk. While Dangka or Baduy people who have committed acculturation with modern culture and live outside the Kenekes Village.

The people of the Baduy tribe are farmers who depend their lives entirely on nature. A number of people of the Baduy Luar and Baduy Dangka have now become souvenir atisans or weaving craftsmen, but no so many of them are. Each community, the Baduy Dalam and the baduy Luar has their own farming area. In the community of the Baduy Dalam, and land tenure system is unknown. All land belongs together. Each familiy is allowed to work on any land area in accordance with their processing capability. Now there are 83 families of the Baduy Dalam. Interestingly, people of the Baduy Dalam fully reject the use of technology, fertilizers, pesticides, and even prohibits the land plowed by animals or tractors. They consider such techniques will damage soil fertility. Soil is crumbled using sickles and wood to make a hole where to plant the seed. Meanwhile, the people of the Baduy Luar already use pesticides and technologies.
